Happy International Women's Day.
I need a do over. I shared this Spring fashion post, so happy about the warmer temps and I missed something important. This is women's month but also today is International Women's Day. A day when we should applaud how far we have gotten and all of our accomplishments.
With celebrating our accomplishments, we must talk about all we women have been through. This journey for all of us has not been an easy one. Last night, I was glued to the tv watching the Meghan and Harry/Oprah Interview. Although, I have never been a princess/duchess I can relate to how she felt at every turn. I stand with cousin Meghan.
I shared a bunch of inspirational quotes this morning on my Instagram page:
There is no limit to what we as women can accomplish. - Michelle Obama
A girl should be two things: who and what she wants. - Coco Chanel
For most of history, anonymous was a woman. - Virginia Wolf
A woman does not have to be modest to be respected.
Strong women don't have attitudes, they have standards.
Each time a woman stands up for herself, without knowing it possibly, without claiming it, she stands up for all women. - Maya Angelou
Every woman's success should be an inspiration to another. We're strongest when we cheer each other on. - Serena Williams
These are women who have changed the course of history, who inspire us at every turn. I can't acknowledge their greatness without acknowledgement of the struggles faced by women of color. My words are inspired from @Ellathegreat. Black women have been cast aside and traumatized in this movement. We were told to be polite, to cower behind our shining personas, to police our thoughts and words. We experience micro-aggressions at every turn, being ignored, having subordinates become our bosses. We have senior leadership mock us and our culture. We are fired and thrown under the proverbial bus for the smallest mistake while our counterparts are openly coddled, groomed, and rewarded. We are cast aside often to the detriment of the companies we work for just to spite us. Daily traumas leave us questioning who we are, never openly addressing our geniusness. Cousin Meghan said something that hit me like a hot coal "My only regret is that I believed them, had I not, I would've been better prepared." So often we are lead to believe if we just do the work, we will reach new heights and for a lot of black women that is not the case.
I just want to take this day to say: I hear you. I see you. You are loved. You are appreciated. You are great for what you have accomplished or haven't been allowed to yet accomplish. For every mask you have to wear or even choose to wear. For those of us who refuse to wear one anymore. For every kink and curl on your head. For every sway of your hips. For every word spoken or unspoken. For every day you fight the fight and don't feel like you have any more fight left. You are exceptional and I will uplift you. For every idea not heard yet. For every rest not yet taken. I encourage and support you. We are the change we want to see in the world, and I have your back.
From my heart, to yours please raise your head a little higher today.
You are worth celebrating today, and every day thereafter.
